This idea was allready on the shelf for a while, but finally we pulled it off.
The idea was based on the movieposter of one of our favourite movies called “scarface”.
Montana is also the brand of the spraycans we use a lot, so we combined it with their logo.
It came out nice and we are satisfied with the result.

A while ago we were in invited into painting a part of a wall next to the railroad tracks in Leeuwarden. We had the idea of making some kind of mosaic painting, which viewed from a distance, looks like a photo, and from a close view, just colored squares.

First we had to adjust a “normal” photo into a limited palette of colors and also into little squares. Being a photoshop artist, it was very easy to do that. (see photo 1)
After that we had to put some numbers manually into the squares, so that we know which colour comes where. (similar like the dutch “ravensburger” system). (see photo 2)

Next, we needed a range of similar colors. Montana cans come in different colorranges, so the choice wasn’t difficult which paint to choose from. (in dutch: je ziet hier een trapje op een trapje). (see photo 3)

Now came the hardest part: at the last moment the people who arranged the wall decided to put our piece on the left side instead of the right side, so we had to paint the “pixels” mirrored… It took approximately 8 hours to paint all squares on the wall. But the endresult looked better as we would have imagined before… (see photo 4)

Just look from a distance and see the image clearly or take you’re mobile phone and turn on the camera/photo function and aim at the screen, now you should see it clearly… (see photo 5)
